The enduring crisis in Palestine and Israel remains one of the most agonizing moral and political failures of the modern era. Decades of cycle after cycle of violence—marked by civilian casualties, destruction, and deep-seated trauma—have made one truth glaringly evident: violence, regardless of who perpetrates it, offers no pathway to security or justice. Every act of military aggression, terror, and collective punishment destroys human lives and further erodes the foundations of peace. To build a stable future, all forms of violence must be unconditionally denounced. Yet, any meaningful condemnation of violence must address its primary structural root: the military occupation that systematically subjects one population to the absolute control of another.
The underlying ethos of occupation is fundamentally antithetical to international law and human equality. The artwork depicting a soldier holding a tiny, helpless civilian above a landscape of rubble offers a stark visual metaphor for this dynamic. It illustrates how occupation functions on a psychological and physical level: reducing human beings to a state of complete powerlessness, forcing them to feel small, exposed, and entirely dependent on the whims of an overwhelming military apparatus. It is inherently wrong for any nation or group to exercise such absolute dominance over another. A system that demands the subjugation of millions cannot yield security for anyone; it merely perpetuates resentment, instability, and endless conflict.
To break this cycle, the international community must transition from passive observers to active guarantors of peace. The standard framework of self-directed, bilateral negotiations has repeatedly stalled due to power asymmetries and internal political resistance. Therefore, a definitive solution requires the United Nations to step forward with a robust mandate backed by actual enforcement capability. Under international law, the UN General Assembly and Security Council possess the legal mechanisms to assume temporary authority over disputed regions to prevent humanitarian catastrophes and enforce international consensus.
The United Nations should declare a temporary international protectorate over the occupied territories to oversee a structured transition toward a sovereign Two-State Solution. To achieve this, the UN must deploy a fully empowered International Stabilization Force equipped with genuine military enforcement capabilities, rather than a passive observation mandate. This force would fulfill critical security functions:
- Enforce Demilitarization and Border Security: Guarantee complete ceasefire compliance, secure borders, and prevent non-state armed groups from acquiring weaponry.
- Oversee Withdrawal: Supervise the full, structured withdrawal of occupying forces in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.
- Protect Civilians: Provide immediate, neutral security for both Israeli and Palestinian civilians, ending the environment of fear and subjugation depicted in the visual metaphor.
- Bridge Statehood: Administer civil services, rebuild infrastructure, and support the training of a vetted, civil police service until sovereign institutions can fully govern.
Under this international stewardship, the path to a viable Two-State Solution becomes clear: an independent, sovereign Palestinian State existing side-by-side with the State of Israel along internationally recognized borders, with Jerusalem managed under a shared or special international framework. True security for Israel cannot be built on the occupation of Palestine, just as liberation for Palestinians cannot be achieved through violence against Israelis. By replacing unilateral military dominance with collective international authority, the international community can ensure that no human being is made to feel small or powerlessly held in the hands of another.
